For The Forgiveness Project (Maine To California), Amy Stacey Curtis set out to explore forgiving, not being ready to forgive, and being unable to forgive, through an interactive exhibition, a podcast series, and a free, find-in-public-spaces book/ebook. As she collected the personal narratives and portraits of people she met, Amy would travel from Maine to California, to forgive and ask the forgiveness of her mother whom she hadn’t seen in 28 years.
Update from Amy: “During this project, I learned my mother passed away. Now my new intention was to travel west collecting stories, and to perhaps bring some of my mother’s remains to Maine. Due to insufficient funds and ongoing recovery from brain injury, I did not succeed in making this trip, but many people shared their stores through this website.”
“I am in the process of distributing the free paperback edition of the book throughout the United States, the book meant to be passed on from reader to reader. This book alternates between stories of forgiveness and non-forgiveness including my own. I intend for this free book to be shared widely in its physical form, also at no cost through its ebook which can be downloaded and shared from here.”
The Forgiveness Project is supported by a grant from the Artist’s Resource Trust (Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation) as well as an American Rescue Plan Maine Project Grant, a subgranting program administered by SPACE Gallery for the National Endowment for the Arts.
